My Hope for the Future Reaffirmed: Gleanings from an Environmental Studies Major and Aspiring Future International Lumber Broker

LogsMason Wood completed his summer internship for Environmental Studies at OHC at our Lufkin, TX location.  We wanted to share his final written paper about his experience.  It makes us proud to know that the future generation of lumbermen and lumber women feel called to carry on responsible sustainability efforts in the lumber industry.  We’ve always said, “Nobody cares about the forest more than a lumberman.” Our dads and our grandads were lumbermen and we want there to be a forest for generations to come, so that our kids and grandkids can continue the family legacy.  That’s why we make it our mission to source lumber from legally harvested forests.

As I wrap up my summer internship at Overseas Hardwoods Company (OHC), I want to share a bit about my experience. As an Environmental Studies major and an aspiring future international lumber broker, choosing to intern at OHC was an easy decision for me. Driven by the unwavering commitment to sustainable forestry practices at OHC, I have immersed myself in navigating environmental regulations, understanding sustainable forestry guidelines, and exploring how businesses can lead in environmental conservation.

It has been reaffirming to discover that exotic hardwoods can be one of the most environmentally sustainable materials available when properly managed. Contrary to common misconceptions, responsibly sourced exotic hardwoods often come from well-managed forests that prioritize biodiversity and long-term forest health. Learning about the rigorous certification processes and sustainable harvesting standards employed by OHC opened my eyes to the positive impact that conscientious forestry practices can have on ecosystems and local communities. It’s inspiring to see how the exotic hardwood industry can provide high-quality materials while contributing to global sustainability efforts when managed with care and foresight.

Responsible lumber harvesting practices such as selective logging and reforestation not only provide essential resources but also support local economies by creating jobs and ensuring fair wages. Moreover, these practices preserve biodiversity, maintain ecosystem health, and contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. By balancing economic benefits with environmental stewardship, responsible lumber harvesting can foster sustainable development and a healthier future for both, communities, and the planet.

The future of sustainable lumber harvesting hinges on finding a balance that ensures forest health and resilience while meeting global wood demands responsibly. Efforts must focus on mitigating soil erosion, preserving vital habitats, and promoting practices like reforestation to safeguard ecosystems for future generations. Balancing these priorities is crucial for protecting wildlife and sustaining the natural environment we depend on.

More than just a learning opportunity; this experience has allowed me to contribute to meaningful environmental stewardship efforts. My newfound understanding of how businesses can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainability encourages me and excites me even more to advocate for responsible environmental practices and policies.

Fueled by a passion for global trade and sustainable forestry, I’m dedicated to mastering the complexities of timber markets across different regions.  I look forward to the day that I get to leverage this passion with my multicultural understanding to forge strong partnerships with suppliers and clients worldwide as an international lumber broker. Utilizing my studies in school along with what I have learned about the industry at OHC not just to facilitate efficient transactions but also to promote responsible forestry practices and ethical business standards on a global scale.

In conclusion, I’ve realized the critical importance of choosing sustainable products. Each board sourced at OHC represents more than just a building material—it embodies a commitment to responsible forestry practices and environmental stewardship by sourcing from responsibly managed forests. Understanding these distinctions underscores the significance of our choices in promoting a healthier planet and supporting communities that depend on forest resources. May we all be reminded that sustainable sourcing isn’t just a checkbox—it’s a fundamental step towards ensuring a sustainable future for all.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Overseas Hardwoods Company for this remarkable opportunity. The skills and knowledge I have acquired will undoubtedly influence my future professional journey in meaningful ways.
